DVD Text only Navigation buttons

Post by sjj1805 » Sun Apr 13, 2008 10:12 pm

VideoStudio and MovieFactory come with several ready made templates and also customized navigation buttons. However none of the navigation buttons are in text format - instead they look more like these:

The purpose of this tutorial is to create some replacement navigation buttons like these:

When you create a DVD Menu with VideoStudio/MovieFactory there is a customize option so that you can replace the existing buttons with an alternative set:

These buttons are located at the following locations
C:\\Program Files\\Ulead Systems\\Ulead VideoStudio 11\\Content\\Menu Template\\4x3\\Customize\\Navigation Button
C:\\Program Files\\Ulead Systems\\Ulead VideoStudio 11\\Content\\Menu Template\\16x9\\Customize\\Navigation Button
C:\\Program Files\\Ulead Systems\\Ulead DVD MovieFactory 6\\Ulead DVD MovieFactory 6\\Content\\Menu Template\\4x3\\Customize\\Navigation Button
C:\\Program Files\\Ulead Systems\\Ulead DVD MovieFactory 6\\Ulead DVD MovieFactory 6\\Content\\Menu Template\\16x9\\Customize\\Navigation Button

To create your own set of text only buttons, the easiest method is to firstly open an existing set from one of the above locations. The purpose of this is so that you an copy the object names. The way a DVD Menu works is that these objects have specific names which are as follows:

IMG_TEMPLATE - The image that you see when you select a set of buttons
BTN_PLAYALL - the \"Play\" button
BTN_MENU - the \"Menu\" button
BTN_NEXT - the \"Next\" button
BTN_PREVIOUS - the \"Previous\" button.

Creating these button sets is a lot easier than creating a full blown DVD Menu from scratch:
Tutorial: PhotoImpact: Creating DVD Menu from scratch

Step 1. Open an existing button set.

Step 2. Copy the object names.
Using copy/paste select the names of these objects from the \"layer manager\" one at a time and paste them into Windows Notepad so you can use them later.

Step 3. Save a new Template
OK I know you haven't done anything yet, but the reason to save the template under a new name is so that you do not accidentally ruin the existing template we just opened. Simply use Save As and give it a new name but save in the existing hard drive directory.

Step 4. Delete the existing objects.
Before you do this you must \"show\" the \"hidden\" image template by clicking the show/hide box:

Then select all the objects and pres he delete key on the keyboard.

Step 5. Use the Text tool and create your \"buttons\"

Image

You must do this in 4 steps, do not create the text in one go.
ie. Type \"Menu\" then select another part of the canvas and type \"Play\" etc.

Step 6. Convert the text to images.

Select one item of text and right click then convert text to image.
Image

Repeat this for each of the other text objects so that they are now all images.

Step 7. Create the IMG_TEMPLATE image.

Select all of the objects in the layer manager then right click and \"Duplicate\"

With the 4 duplicated objects still selected - merge as single object.

Step 8. Name the objects.

This is where Windows Notepad comes in handy, simply copy/paste the names you saved earlier:

Step 9. Hide the Image Template.

Step 10. Open VideoStudio/MovieFactory and test your new set of buttons.

You can save the same text buttons to the 16.9 and 4.3 folders - any difference in size will be negligible.

Here is a zip file containing the two sets of text navigation buttons used in the example above.
