Indeed, this is a common problem with these.

My 1998 Mondeo failed its MOT recently because the rear (centre) seat belt
had \"jammed to excess\" so I had it replaced by the garage at a cost of 125
UK pounds. I \"inspected\" the work, as you do, when I got home, tipped the
rear seat forward and back again and the new belt also jammed! Is this a
known problem or have I been duped? They claimed to have replaced the reel
but could'nt find the old one. I was interested to see what the original
problem had been but got nowhere.

So... taken by the \"professional\" shop, again.
I suspect you are right. NOW take it back to them and insist they make it
right. Should be at no charge... that's the ONE bright side to this.
Oh, FIRST use an indelible marker as far down the belt as you can reach.
MAke a tiny but traceable \"brand\" on it.

someone wrote on here on the last couple of weeks about the middle rear
seat belt in the Mondeo (my server has lost the original post). As I said
at the time my belt had also jammed and the only thing I knew for sure was
that it worked before I put the seats down. Well my husband has looked at
it over the weekend and it turns out it's not a problem with the actual
seat belt but with the lock at the top of the seat that locks the seat in
place (so he dismantled the whole of the seat for nothing) - if it's not
locked properly (try giving it a good hard slam) then the belt mechanism
won't work - must be a safety thing. Supposedly there is a red mark that
you can see all of or a bit of if the seat isn't locked in place properly
--anyway after he'd looked at mine it's now working fine. I then did a
google search and found that it was mentioned in a newsgroup a few years
ago and people then found that it was the same thing so it must be quite a
common problem.
